A noted English publisher, editor, and author Charles Knight (1791-1873) compiled this set of short stories. Here he publishes an extremely large collection of tales, novels, and essays ranging over various topics in an effort to provide half an hour slots of reading to fill ones day. Included are works such as Sir Alexander Ball by Coleridge, the Strange Contrarieties Discoverable in Human Nature by Pascal, and The Progress of the Great Plagues of London by Pepys. This set was given as part of a commendation of merit to Edward Dillon, with his name being converted into the latin 'Edwardus'. Awarded by St Stanislaus College, part of Beaumont College that was a Jesuit public school in Old Windsor, Berkshire, it bears the date of August 1st 1889. Edward was presented this collection for being the first in his school class, knows as 'Grammar'. Three of four volumes, missing volume III. CONDITION In a calf binding with gilt collegiate embossing to front boards, bound by Relfe Brothers. Externally, smart with light rubbing to boards. Light bumping to extremities of boards. Tear to front board vol I. Collegiate bookplate to front pastedown of all. Hinges starting but firm to all. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with occasional spots to first of vol I. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
