The publisher's Preface gives a good, brief biography of the playwright [1860 - 1904], & a sense of his era. The introduction is by an eminent British actor, Sir John Gielgud, who performed in Chekhov's plays many times, in a distinguished career. He also adapted a version of The Cherry Orchard , & directed the London production. Translated to English [from the Russian original] by Constance Garnett; her translations of all Chekhov's works were first published in London, in 12 volumes, 1912 - 1920. Illustrated by Lajos Szaley, a Hungarian artist, who studied at the AFA in Budapest, & fled the Communists in 1946.
