Description

MINT CONDITION - this collector's edition is bound in beautiful calf, & gilt stamped - front, back, & ridged spine. With rich moire' satin endpapers, & a sewn-in, satin ribbon bookmark, this beautiful book is archival quality, on acid-neutral paper, with gilt edges. The contents are just as timeless & valued - Three Sisters , 1901, & The Cherry Orchard , 1904. The publisher's Preface gives a good, brief biography of the playwright [1860 - 1904], & a sense of his era. The introduction is by an eminent British actor, Sir John Gielgud, who performed in Chekhov's plays many times, in a distinguished career. He also adapted a version of The Cherry Orchard , & directed the London production. Translated to English [from the Russian original] by Constance Garnett; her translations of all Chekhov's works were first published in London, in 12 volumes, 1912 - 1920. Illustrated by Lajos Szaley, a Hungarian artist, who studied at the AFA in Budapest, & fled the Communists in 1946. His drawings eloquently capture the time, & the emotions of Chekhov's scenes. . **************** . A handsome, classic, double volume. This is the 1977 limited edition, sold by subscription only.
