Description
The Works of George Eliot. Cabinet Edition. William Blackwood and Sons. Edinburgh and London. No publication date, but likely published circa the 1880s. Books are 7 inches tall by 5 inches wide. A very handsome set in clean condition. The Cabinet edition was first published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1878. From the George Eliot Archive: "This complete collection, published two years before Eliot's death, represents the final corrected version of her works. Many subsequent editions have been published, with the Cabinet Edition as their foundation, which continues to be the scholarly standard for citing Eliot’s words." Half leather bindings with red marbled paper to front and rear boards. Raised bands and gilt stamping to spines. Matching red marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. Leather is smooth and clean. Most volumes have wear/chipping along the edges and corners. Two volumes have detached front boards: Romola Vol. II and Daniel Deronda Vol. I (see last two pictures). Romola Vol. I has a large chip to the top of the spine. Some spots/foxing to page edges. A couple pages have tears/chips. Some heavy foxing to several endpapers. Pages are very clean overall, with several names or small notes pencilled inside the fronts of a couple volumes. Bindings are pretty firm.
