Includes the life of the author and his list of Scots proverbs. Volumes I starts with a list of the dozens of poems contained within and is followed by a chapter titled "To the most beautiful, the Scots Ladies." Volume II offers a preface to the American edition with dozens of poems, the proverbs and a glossary of Scots words. 296 and 324 pages. 4.5" by 7.5". Ramsay is considered to have created the first circulating library in Britain when he rented books from his shop in 1726. Published by Benjamin Chapman. Philadelphia, PA. 1813. Hardback is overall in FAIR condition. Each volume is bound in leather showing significant aging and wear to all areas. Volumes I and II both have cracked shoulders where the boards are partially detached and the rear board of volume II being attached by a single thread. All areas of the spines are worn with cracked, flaking leather. Pastedowns and endpapers show light to moderate staining with writing in ink. The textblock is age toned with the interior showing gentle wrinkling and moderate foxing though text appears highly legible. The binding is pliant though secure.
