Description
This rare and beautiful set is in immaculate condition. Many of the pages in this two volume set are still joined, suggesting that these books have never been regularly handled. There is no proper copyright page in either text, but my best guess is that this set was published between 1900 and 1920 based on similar editions of this text and the copyright dates of other books in my recently unearthed collection. “A good book is the life-blood of a master spirit, embalmed & treasured upon purpose to a life beyond life.” - Milton I can find no other copies of these red leather bound editions of The Letters of Charles Lamb from J. M. Dent & Co. and E. P. Dutton & Co. available for sale online to compare prices. This set, along with others in my storefront, were recently retrieved from a storage unit where they have been packed away and untouched since 1969. The condition of these books is near perfection besides a pencil marking on each book’s last page and some discoloration on the title page of volume one and the opening page of volume two. Each book has a blue fabric bookmark sewn into its binding which has also yellowed with age. Lamb is perhaps best remembered by modern readers for the quotation that opens Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, “Lawyers, I suppose, were children once.” These collections of letters include his correspondences with other literary legends such as William Wordsworth and scholars like Thomas Manning.
