Description
This is a very RARE three mini book set of leather bound books by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. The set comes in an open ended book box. The books were published by the Knickerbocker Leather and Novelty Company, New York. The books are miniature versions of AS YOU LIKE IT, MERCHANT OF VENICE, TAMING OF THE SHREW. The front covers are embossed with the name of William Shakespeare and the spine has the name of the book printed in gold. The thing that makes these books so rare is that also on the cover of each book, embossed in gold, it says…. “COMPLIMENTS OF ALABAMA-GEORGIA SYRUP CO. Montgomery, Ala.” The Alabama-Georgia (ALAGA) Syrup company was established in 1906 by Louis and Willie Whitfield. Mrs. Whitfield was from Montgomery, AL and her husband was from LaGrange, GA. They named the company to represent both states. ALAGA syrup, in the time it was extremely popular, was promoted in magazines and advertisements by famous people such as Willie Mays, Nat King Cole, Hank Aaron, Ernest Hemingway among others. ALAGA syrup is still being produced and is found in stores across the southeast of the United States. The Knickerbocker Leather and Novelty Company made these miniature books and sometimes printed them with a company name as advertising and might have been given as freebies or free with a purchase of another item. From what I researched, it’s possible these were printed around 1910 but I’m not sure. They are in such great shape for their age. No pages missing. No torn pages. Leather is intact and I have provided many pictures to assess condition. The leather on the spine of the books appears to be faded with age as they are what was visible from the box container they are in. I have seen a couple books like this with an embossed business advertising name but not very many. And I have NOT seen even one that is a set of 3 in their own case. Truly a wonderful antique item.
