NOTES: Extremely rare and important, Watson’s Weekly Art Journal was an American Art Journal depicting the development of American visual culture. Now found in prominent museums and libraries such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Frick Collection, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and Brigham Young University, copies are held by the Library of Congress and the American Antiquarian Society. This perhaps one of the last physical copies available outside of a collection, a quick search reveals no copies available for sale online. This is Volume 1 from April to October 1864, complete. Externally it is poor; a missing spine leading to detachment of covers and much wear to both the boards and leather. However, internally it is in very good to VG+ condition and bears an inscription on the ffep that reads, “Mrs. [HJ Stuart] with the regards of the Editors March 1865” perhaps a complimentary copy to a patron of the arts or spouse of an artist. Please see photos, all questions welcome.
