Containing a New, Authentic, Entertaining, Instructive, Full and Complete History of Captain Cook's First, Second, Third and Last Voyages. The Whole of these Voyages of Capt. James Cook, &c. being Newly written by the Editors from the Authentic Journals of Several Principal Officers and other Gentlemen of the most Distinguished Naval and Philosophical Abilities, who sailed in the Various Ships, and now publishing under the Immediate Direction of George William Anderson, Esq. Assisted, Very Materially, by a Principal Officer who sailed in the Resolution Sloop, and by Many Other Gentlemen of the Royal Navy". This First Edition was published in 1786 by Alex. Hogg, London. It is bound in brown suede with impressed decorations. This 655 page book measures 15 1/2" X 10" X 3 1/4" and weighs 10 pounds 2 ounces. This book is complete with frontispiece portrait, protective page, fold-out map, preface, many illustrations and maps, journal of the route, concluding remarks and directions to the bookbinder. However, the suede binding is scraped, scratched and worn off in many places. The spine is chipped, torn and the title is very faint. There are cracks in the suede along both sides of the spine and the covers are loose. The suede sheds. Inside, there are 2"-3" watermarks along the bottom of the first and last few pages with some shallow ones appearing in other places. The fold-out map is crumpled and has a tear on the bottom margin. Some pages have foxing, toning or spots, but most are clear. They are all very readable. I believe the binding is secure. There is no bookplate and no writing in the book.
