Historically significant edition of an early American Catholic family Bible in the Douay Rheims Version with annotations by Father George Leo Haydock. This unique edition was published in sections, a few pages at a time over the years 1852-54. It is a distinct edition from the concurrently-published edition from England that had Haydock’s annotations abridged by Father Husenbeth. This edition contains the full unabridged annotations, is in the larger “Imperial” quarto size (13” x 10”), and contains a slight revision of the New Testament text by the American priests, Frs. J. R. Bayley and James McMahon. It remained in publication for many years, and was the edition selected for reproduction in modern editions by Catholic Treasure, publishers. Bound in full leather with original blind and gilt-tooled covers and beveled edges. Later spine in six gilt panels offset by raised bands. Gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Several full page plates including frontispieces and engraved titles to each testament and engraved publisher’s certificate. Covers show usual signs of wear. Front cover is reattached and rear cover s repaired at top and bottom of hinge. Endpapers soiled. Interior is generally clean with occasional spotting. Overall, an attractive copy of this historically significant edition. 1671 pp. including tables. Large, heavy book.

Reviews

  1. MundosFI32ec

Just as seller described it, in very good condition for an 1833 first edition. Inscribed as a gift in1856 and, by the looks of it, read exactly once, the only evidence of having been read at all being the few pages that had been turned down and back again so long ago as to be hardly perceptible. Seller described book carefully, confirmed purchase immediately, packaged the book very carefully, and shipped it quickly. Great seller!
