The fairy and folk tales collected in this volume are all reprinted from nineteenth-century sources, but they date back much farther, to a time when they were part of a centuries-old oral tradition and had yet to be committed to the printed page. To the sophisticated, they were a record of long-held superstitions and quaint folk beliefs of the Irish peasantry. But to those who told and listened them, they were not at all farfetched; rather, these stories expressed something fundamental about their culture and way of life. The stories in this volume feature a wide variety of fantastic beings and creatures that appear in the folk tales of other cultures, among them ghosts, witches, changelings, and fairies. Most, however, could only take place on Irish soil.
