Harry Sinclair Lewis, who lived from 1885 – 1951, was an American novelist, short story writer, and playwright. In 1930, he became the first writer from the United States to receive the NOBEL PRIZE in LITERATURE. Dr. Will Kennicott, a medical doctor in Gopher Prairie, Minnesota, meets Carol Milford, a Blodgett College graduate. She works in the St. Paul Library. Kennicott is charmed by Carol's bright talk and pretty face; she likes Will's solidity combined with boyishness. After a brief courtship, they marry and settle in his hometown of Gopher Prairie. Carol finds the rural town dull, ugly, and undignified and she seeks to change the rural town but meets with great resistance. Carol soon is isolated and the source of a torrent of town gossip. One of her worst debates is over the servant problem, whether a maid should be treated warmly or kept in her place. Carol finds conversations about babies, the Bible, and household gadgets as trivia. 443 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
