Thornton Niven Wilder, who lived from 1897---1975 was an American playwright and novelist who was born in Wisconsin, the son of a clergyman. "The Cabala" is a fantasy tale set in early 20th-century Rome and presents sketches of a group of people that share a common bond. The narrator of the novel is a young American student and writer visiting Rome for the first time. When a bridge in eighteenth-century Peru collapses, five people are killed. The Spanish friar BROTHER JUNIPER witnesses the accident and is haunted by the question: "Why did this happen to THESE five?" "The Woman of Andros" is the story of a philosopher-courtesan of ancient Greece who entertains the young men of the island of Brynos, to the consternation of the Brynian elders. Cultured, beautiful, and wise, Chrysis feels despair at the vanity and emptiness she sees in most lives. Pamphilus, a regular guest at Chrysis' elegant banquets, is the son of a prominent Brynos merchant . . .and Chrysis loves and pites the young man. . .
