Description

Franklin Library leather edition of Thomas Mann's "Stories," a Limited edition, Illustrated by Jane Sterrett, one of the COLLECTED STORIES OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST WRITERS series, published in 1978. Bound in a camel tan leather, the book has gold moire silk end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. Stories in this volume include: "Death in Venice," "Tonio Kroger," "Mario and the Magician," Disorder and Early Sorrow," and "Felix Krull." Paul Thomas Mann, who lived from 1875---1955, was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist and the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. His highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas are noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories, as wells as ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. "Death in Venice," a novella first published in 1912, presents a great writer suffering writer's block who visits Venice and is liberated, uplifted, and then increasingly obsessed by the sight of a stunningly beautiful youth. Though he never speaks to the boy, much less touches him, the writer finds himself drawn deep into ruinous inward passion; meanwhile, Venice, and finally, the writer himself, succumb to a cholera plague. 317pages.
