Saul Bellow, who lived from 1915-2005, was an American Jewish author. Born in Quebec of parents who had come from Russia two years earlier, his family moved to Chicago when he was eleven; his early childhood had been spent in a Montreal slum. Bellow was raised in a Jewish home, and the fluent Yiddish he learned there had a noticeable influence on his English style. After graduating from Northwestern University, he taught at various colleges and universities, but his real vocation was writing. "Humboldt's Gift" is not basically a Jewish novel even though its protagonist, CHARLIE CITRINE, is a Jewish author from Chicago. Instead, the book deals with Charlie's attempts to cope with a lifestyle and a career that are turning sour. Bellow is the only American author to win the National Book Award three times. 467 pages---a GORGEOUS leather. I offer Combined shipping.
