Franklin Library leather edition of Miguel de Cervantes's "Three Exemplary Novels," Illustrated with Eighteenth-century engravings, Translated by Samuel Putnam, a Limited edition, one of the COLLECTED STORIES OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST WRITERS series, published in 1983. Bound in light orange leather, the book has ivory moire silk end leaves, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Miguel de Cervantes, who lived from 1547-1616, is Spain's most beloved novelist and the author of "Don Quixote." The three novels are: "Rinconete and Cortadillo" is one of twelve short stories and describes the comical adventures of two petty criminals as they travel to Seville and are taken in the by the city's thieves' guild. Seville at the time was a rich city with marked social contrasts, being the entrepot of Spain and the new world of the Americas. The other two works are "Man of Glass"--- the story of two students who were riding along the banks of the river Tormes when they came upon a lad sleeping beneath a tree. The lad said he was bound for Salamanca to look for his master. The two travelers take the lad with them. "The Colloquy of the Dogs" is dialect that took place between Cipion and Berganza, dogs belonging to the Hospital of Resurrection, which is in the city of Valladoilid. 179 pages---a RARE title.
