Description

Franklin Library leather edition of James A. Michener's "Tales of the South Pacific," Illustrated by Dwight C. Shepler and William F. Draper, Frontispiece Portrait of Michener by Michael Deas, a Limited edition, one of the COLLECTED STORIES OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST WRITERS series, published in 1982. Bound in navy blue leather, the book has French moire silk end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. James A. Michener, who lived from 1907-1997, wrote more than 40 books. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948 for "Tales of the South Pacific," which was adapted for a Broadway play. Born in NYC, he was adopted by a Quaker family in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Michener graduated from SWARTHMORE COLLEGE where he played basketball. He later traveled and studied at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. "Tales of the South Pacific" was a best seller. The stories came out of his experience serving as a Naval officer in the South Pacific in World War 2. Michener sketched out his tales during the war, outlining the stories by day and typing the materials at night. The NY Times described the stories as "humorous, engrossing and surprisingly moving" and called the work "one of the most remarkable books to come out of the war." 413 pages.
