Joel Chandler Harris, who lived from 1848-1908, was born and reared in EATONTON, GEORGIA where he hunted coons, possums, rabbits, and foxes. When Harris was thirteen years old, he was hired by Joseph Turner, who owned TURNWOLD PLANTATION and the "Countryman," a weekly newspaper. Harris lived at Turnwood where he and the Turner children visited with African/American children, listening to their sayings, their songs, and their dialects. Harris wrote stores about UNCLE REMUS and the TAR BABY.
