Henry Fielding, who lived from 1707--1754, was educated at ETON and studied law at Leyden. "Tom Jones," published in 1749, is the story of a foundling, mysteriously discovered one night in the bed of the wealthy, virtuous, and benevolent Mr. Allworthy, who give the foundling, named TOM JONES, a home and educates him. Tom grows up to be generous but a "lusty man" who displeasures Squire Allworthy when Tom has sex with MOLLY SEAGRIM, the keeper's daughter. Tom later falls in love with SOPHIA, the beautiful daughter of SQUIRE WESTERN, but Tom falls victim to BLIFIL, a mean sneak, who wants to marry Sophia, and he hates Tom. After displeasing Squire Allworthy and being disinherited, Tom sets out for LONDON and is seduced by LADY BELLASTON. Meanwhile Sophia, who is in love with Tom, determines not to marry Blifil. Sophia escapes. Later Tom discovers that he is not a "bastard" child born out of wedlock but the son of Allworthy's sister. This novel was 'banned' everywhere when Fielding published it---out-of-wedlock sex---was a "taboo topic" in 18th Century England. 732 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
