He grew up in Oak Forrest, Illinois, the son of a medical doctor and a musical mother. As an adult, he was an ambulance drive in WW I and later lived in Paris, Kansas City, Key West, Florida, CUBA, Idaho, and Arkansas and he traveled all over the world .
