The son of a Nottinghamshire miner, Lawrence was educated at University College, Nottingham, and was for a time a schoolmaster before turning to writing as a profession. Apart from the years in England during the First World War, he and his wife, FRIEDA, lived mostly abroad, in Italy, Australia, and Taos, NEW MEXICO. The four short novels include: "Love Among the Haystacks," "The Ladybird," "The Fox," and "The Captain's Doll." Whether a man, like Count Dionys in "The Ladybird," or a woman, such as Mrs. Hepburn in "The Captain's Doll," these catalytic characters introduced disorder into established relationships. In "Love Among the Haystacks," MAURICE WOOKEY and his older brother GEOFFREY find themselves competing for the attention of a foreign governess living in a nearby cottage. Both young men are unusually shy of women, yet this girl's Slavic beauty---different from the local girls---is so great that she inspires each of the brothers to try desperately to win her favor. In "The Ladybird," a dutiful English wife is trapped in an unsatisfying marriage but becomes attracted to a Bohemian count. Lady Daphne has entered into a marriage in which her "reckless, anti-philanthropic passion could find no outlet." Lady Daphne is a victim of England socially prohibitive aristocracy, torn between her genteel upbringing and her desire to be daring. 330 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
