Abraham Lincoln, who lived from 1809-1865, was born in a log cabin in KENTUCKY to illiterate and frontier parents. None of the nearly 250 documents included here have been abridged. The most famous is the November 1863 speech Lincoln delivered at the new National Soldiers Cemetery at GETTSYBURG, PENNSYVANIA. The Chicago Tribute wrote: "The dedicatory remarks of President Lincoln will live among the annals of man." Lincoln comes to us in the mists of legend as a homespun "rail splitter" from the Illinois prairies, a saintly commoner who called himself "Abe," spoke in a deep voice. He cared little about material reward and social station. He also comes to us as Father Abraham, the Great Emancipator who led the North off to the civil war to free the slaves and after the conflict ended offered the South a tender and forgiving hand. After navigating a flatboat to New Orleans, Lincoln returned to NEW SALEM, ILLINOIS, where he did various jobs while studying law. Lincoln's intellectual horizons expanded rapidly once he moved to New Salem in 1831. His writings during the 1830s and 1840s were not confined to letters, legislative bills, and speeches. He also was writing verse and one narrative, "The Remarkable Case of Arrest for Murder." His political satire---a series of "Rebecca" letters--- and "The Bear Hunt" were widely read. His "House Divided Speech" he gave in Springfield that day after his nomination for the Senate in 1858 is a classic. Lincoln was a volunteer in the BLACK HAWK WAR and later served in the Illinois State Legislature, 1831-37. He courted and married MARY TODD LINCOLN and was elected PRESIDENT of the U.S. in 1860. Lincoln never served a day in President's office when the country was not engaged in the bitter CIVIL WAR. Lincoln was the first authentic humorist to occupy the Executive Mansion in Washington; his gift of laughter and his flair for the funny were known during his presidency. 634 pages---a RARE title.
