Abraham Lincoln, who lived from 1809-1865, was born in a log cabin in KENTUCKY to illiterate and frontier parents. After navigating a flatboat to New Orleans, Lincoln returned to NEW SALEM, ILLINOIS, where he did various jobs while studying law. Lincoln was a volunteer in the BLACK HAWK WAR and later served in the Illinois State Legislature, 1831-37. He courted and married MARY TODD LINCOLN and was elected PRESIDENT of the U.S. in 1860. Lincoln never served a day in President's office when the country was not engaged in the bitter CIVIL WAR. Sandburg wrote: "Perhaps no other American held so definitely in himself both those elements---the genius of the Tragic---the spirit of the Comic. The fate of man, his burdens and crosses, the pity of circumstance, the extent of tragedy in human life, these stood forth in word shadows of the Lincoln utterance. . . And in contrast he came to be known nevertheless as the first authentic humorist to occupy the Executive Manion in Washington, his gift of laughter and his flair for the funny being taken as a national belonging." Sandburg covers JEFFERSON DAVIS, a Mississippi cotton farmer, West Point graduate, Black Hawk Lieutenant, Mexican War veteran, U.S. Senator, Secretary of War under the Pierce Administration, orator, horseman, and man of fate. Lincoln's army of 75,000 volunteers Davis called a "posse comitatus" to round up 5,000,000 outlaws. . ." Davis was chosen to head the 11 states that had committed to him against 23 states formally still in the Union with Lincoln. Often considered the "definitive biography of President Lincoln," this volume won the PULITZER PRIZE for History. 1086 pages, including Sources and Bibliography and an Index.
