Description

Easton Press leather edition of Charles Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities," a COLLECTOR'S edition, Illustrated by Rene Ben Sussan, one of the 100 GREATEST BOOKS EVER WRITTEN series, published in 1981. Bound in brown leather with a portrait of Dickens in the center of the front board, the book has camel tan French moire silk end leaves, with gold tooling around the edges of the silk, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for minor imperfection to top gilt. Charles Dickens, who lived from 1812-1870, was born near PORTSMOUTH, England but his family moved to LONDON when he was two years old. In no other work of fiction is the FRENCH REVOLUTION brought to as vivid life. "The Tale of Two Cities" is the story of a dissolute young Englishman and his look-alike, the nephew of a French nobleman. Both are in love with the pretty daughter of a man who has been imprisoned for eighteen years in the Bastille. He is now in a hiding in a Paris attic above the wine shop of a fanatic Frenchwoman who is constantly plying her knitting needles. The novel opens with these immortal lines: "It was the Best of Times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way . . ." The novel closes with more immortal lines: "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done: it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." 371 pages----a BEAUTIFUL book! Quite the surprised, at first I thought I ordered something from a pet shop because of the box turns out to be my order xD. My books were well packaged no noticeable box damage internally and externally. They were as described in the listing and shipped promptly in a 2 weeks window. Would recommend seller.
