Description

Notes on Alternating Current Machinery By R.R. Lawrence, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Electrical Engineering Department Printed for use in connection with the 1914 MIT course on A.C. Machinery Privately published, Boston: Ringer Company, 1914 Includes: • Notes on Static Transformers • Notes on Synchronous Motors • Notes on Alternators Condition • Binding: Secure and sound. Quarter leather with pebbled cloth boards. Outer layer of spine leather appears to have been previously detached and professionally re-adhered; stable and non-structural. Wear to spine ends, corners rounded with minor leather loss, but boards remain well attached. • Cover: Moderate wear consistent with age. Gilt spine titling legible but lightly dulled. • Endpapers: Front pastedown bears light pencil notations, including equations and calculations in period hand. Hinges intact. • Text block: Very good+. Internally clean and complete. No tears or stains noted. All pages legible with uniform toning. Diagrams and technical illustrations are sharp and unmarked. Description: This rare and possibly unique 1914 electrical engineering course manual compiles three separately issued technical manuals used in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s A.C. Machinery course, prepared by Associate Professor R.R. Lawrence. Each section bears individual title pages and tables of contents. The course texts were printed for internal student use and not issued commercially, making surviving examples extremely scarce. Sections include: • Static Transformers (pp. i–68): Covers core insulation, eddy current loss, hysteresis, voltage regulation, polyphase configurations, and parallel operations. • Synchronous Motors (pp. 1–40): Details include V-curves, hunting and damping, vector diagrams, motor constants, and efficiency losses. • Alternators (pp. 1–98): In-depth treatment of armature reaction, harmonics, waveforms, leakage reactance, efficiency, and heating tests. Each chapter features schematic diagrams, technical data, and concise analysis reflective of early 20th-century engineering pedagogy. Copyrighted 1914 by Lawrence. Bound as a single volume, likely by MIT or a professional binder for student or faculty use. The presence of both pencil notes and a Ringer Company (Boston) bookseller label adds provenance. An uncommon and historically significant artifact from the early days of electrical engineering education at MIT. Ships promptly and securely. No marks or tears to the text block beyond noted pencil annotations on endpapers.
