A collection of essays and papers, discussing art, medical history, and biography. The work includes two of Brown's most popular works, 'Rab and His Friends', and 'Marjorie Fleming'. 'Marjorie Fleming' iis a essay on the ten year old prodigy of Walter Scott. 'Rab and His Friends' is a short story, following Rab, a huge mastiff dog. It was a very popular short story in the nineteenth century. Illustrated with a frontispiece to volumes I and III. Written by John Brown, who is best known for this work. He was a Scottish physician and essayist. Bookplate to the front pastedowns 'Herbert S. Squance'. CONDITION In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Fading to the spines. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots, mostly to the first and last few pages.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
