William Makepeace Thackeray is best known for his satirical works regarding English society, particularly for 'Vanity Fair'. He often published under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism. He took up journalism, something he had dabbled with in the past, and wrote art critiques, short sketches, and reviewed books. He started writing longer works of fiction, whilst also contributing to popular magazines such as Punch. In the latter part of his life he achieved greater acclaim for his work and was considered the equal of Charles Dickens. CONDITION In a uniform, half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart, with light rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Occasional mark to boards and loss to the leather. Slight rubbing to boards. The odd spot to the endpapers. Ink stamp to the reverse of the front endpaper of volumes one-four. Hinges slightly strained to some volumes, but holding firm to most volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the occasional spot, mainly to the first and last pages. Iredale Binder stamp to the first blank of each volume.
