Each volume contains an engraved title page to each issue, sheet music, and illustrations throughout the text. However, the coloured frontispieces are absent. Edited by John Erskine Clarke, British clergyman who issued the first parish magazine. He established several other religious publications and was responsible for founding churches schools and hospitals in Battersea. In 1863 he founded "The Children's Prize", which was later called simply "The Prize". He later set to work with publisher William Macintosh to produce "Chatterbox", a weekly paper for older children. CONDITION Rebound in half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, light rubbing, with wear to extremities and spines. All hinges are slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound, and bright, with some instances of spotting. Some closed tears, and slight loss to title page of 1873 volume. All half titles are absent. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
