A Prize from George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh. 1866. Here is an unusual Holy Bible, Old & New Testament. It a small hand held, published in 1866 by Eyre & Spottiswoode in London. The Bible is in Very Good condition. It is elegantly stamped on the cover with a Crest that says “Distribute Cheerfully”. On the inside cover paste down is a glued printed paper saying it is presented to William A. Smart for graduating from George Heriot’s Hospital….it seems to read 1871. But this is not a Hospital, but George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh…it started out as a hospital but later became a very well-known school. See photo’s for an early drawing of the school. See pics for book condition. It is very, very good condition. Full Morocco leather, both covers gold stamped with an emblem saying “ Distribute Cheerfully ”.. Five raised bands on the spine. All page sides gold washed. On one of the front free pages a child has written, later, “Betty Smart”…..perhaps that is William A. Smart’s daughter. There is no other writing inside. There is no staining, foxing or spotting on pages. The text block is very tight, there is no hinge cracking front or rear.. All in all….a very nice & presentable copy, given to a student graduate of George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh , Scotland. To find the published date of 1866 you have to look back, into the New Testament…that is where it states 1866, London on the title page. I’ll offer this for a Buy-It-Now of $34.95 ....JUNE 30 change.
