In smart half calf bindings. With the first series published in 1861, and the second in 1863. Containing seventeen short stories in total, including 'An Unprotected Female at the Pyramids, ' La Mere Bauche', 'A Ride Accross Palestine' and 'The Mistletoe Bough'. Each story had previously appeared in various periodicals, including Cassell's Family Paper and Harper's New York Magazine. Bound without the publisher's catalogue to the rear of the first series, which Sadleir notes 'may be regarded as optional'. A smart first collected edition of a variety short and exotic tales from an author praised for his insights into the lives and minds of the people of the Victorian era. CONDITION In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Light rubbing to board perimeters and lower half of front boards. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting and handling marks throughout, most concentrated to first and last few leaves of each volume.
