In the original French. Uniform half morocco bindings, complete with half titles. George Sand was Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin's pen-name, extremely popular and influential French author in the nineteenth century, she is renowned as one of the most notable writers of the European Romantic movement, more popular than Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac in England. Her novels were particularly influential for Russian and English literature, and her writings and political views also informed numerous Spanish and Latin American authors. The present collection is comprised of the following titles: Francia; Antonia; Francois le Champi; La Petite Fadette; Mont-Reveche; La Famille de Germandre; Flamarande; Jean de la Roche; Elle et Lui; Le Chene Parlant; La Coupe; Cesarine Dietrich; Les Deux Freres; Le Meunier d'Angibault; Nanon; Mademoiselle Merquem; Les Maitres Sonneurs; L'Uscoque; Monsieur Sylvestre; Theatre de George Sand. Elle et Lui was bound in without a half title or title page. Most volumes feature John Clarke Hawkshaw's (1841-1921) bookplate to the front pastedowns, British civil engineer. CONDITION In uniform half morocco bindings over marbled boards, green endpapers, sprinkled edges. Externally generally very smart with minor shelf wear only, minor rubbing to the head and tail of spines and extremities of the boards, light scuffing to the leather of the odd volume, particularly to that of 'Le Chen Parlant'. Some rubbing to the joints of 'Mont-Reveche.' The spine of 'Le Chene Parlant' is particularly sunned. John Clarke Hawkshaw's bookplate to the front pastedowns of most volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Minor loss to the lower margin p. 109 of 'Francia', no loss of text. Light spotting generally scattered to the leaves, although some volumes present clean pages. Light minor damp marking to the lower margin of the first few leaves of 'La Coupe,' and to the margins of the first few leaves of 'Nanon,' not affecting any of the text. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
