All edges gilt. Binder's stamp of Smyth & Co., Gerry St, Liverpool, to the verso of the front free end paper. Ink inscription to the front blank, dated 1856, awarding this volume to Emily Ridgway as a First French Prize. Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) was a French author, poet, and statesman who was greatly influential in the foundation of the French Second Republic. This volume contains three of his poetry collections, all in the original French: 'Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses', 'Recueillements Poétiques', and 'Poésies Diverses'. The first collection, arranged in four parts, was originally published in 1830; the second poetry collection was originally published in 1839. This volume includes some of his best known poems, including 'The West' and 'The Butterfly'. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. CONDITION In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the joints and extremities. A little fading to the spine and extremities of the boards. Front hinge is slightly strained but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot, more so to the first and last few pages.
