Germaine de Stael, commonly known as Madame de Stael, was a French woman of letters of Swiss origin whose lifetime overlapped with the events of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era. She was one of Napoleon's principal opponents. Celebrated for her conversational eloquence, she participated actively in the political and intellectual life of her times. Her works, both critical and fictional, made their mark on the history of European Romanticism. CONDITION In half calf bindings. Externally, rubbed with some bumping to all volume.s Wear to spines. Some joints and hinges starting but generally firm, with front joint to volume IV failed and board detached but present. Bookplates to front pastedown of all volumes and endpapers clipped. Internally, generally firmly bound, although strained in places. Pages bright with some spotting throughout.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
