Complete in two volumes. 'Winter Evening Tales' is a collection of short stories, all of which are set in the south of Scotland. They are rural and traditional tales, as intended by the author to be the kind of stories that would be told in a cottage sitting around the fire during a dark evening in the Scottish winter. The stories in this work include 'The Renowned Adventures of Basil Lee', 'A Peasant's Funeral', 'Story of Two Highlanders', 'The Bridal of Polmood', 'The Shepherd's Calendar', and more. This work was well received when it was published. James Hogg was a Scottish writer, who worked as a shepherd and farmhand in this youth, being mostly self-taught through reading. Whilst he became a successful writer, he continued working as a farmer. He was also a good friend of Walter Scott, and wrote an unauthorised biography on his fellow Scottish poet. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. Copac traces seven copies in UK libraries; no other copy traced at auction in the last 40 years. CONDITION In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, though the front board of Volume II is held by cords only and may detach with further handling. Light rubbing to the boards and spines. Loss to the head and tail of the spines, heavier to Volume II. Discolouration to the spines. Cracks to the head of the joints of Volume I, and to the tail of the rear joint of Volume II. Light bumping to the extremities. Rear hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though Volume II is lightly age-toned, with the odd scattered spot, heavier to Volume II. Worming to the bottom margins throughout the text of Volume II, lightly affecting a few words, though not severely. Pages 5-8 of Volume II are working loose. Small closed tear to the head of page 287/288 of Volume I. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
