Thirlwall was born at Stepney, London, of a Northumbrian family. He was precocious, learning Latin at three, Greek at four, and writing sermons at seven. He went to Charterhouse School, where George Grote and Julius Hare were among his schoolfellows. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, in October 1814. His first essay, "On the Uncertainty of Life" opens this book and was composed when Thirlwall was just seven years old. His father, Thomas, arranged the publication of "Primitiae". In later years, when he was a bishop, Connop Thirlwall felt embarrassed at his earlier precocity and expressed his desire to buy up and burn all remaining copies of this work. This may be the reason for its scarcity. With engraving of the author as a child to frontispiece. Bookplate of Dr G. Hawtin to front pastedown. Very speedy delivery and extremely well packaged. The book is in wonderful condition for age, better I think than described. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it. As for price, I snatched the offer and am extremely pleased that I did. This seller is a perfect find on eBay and I would purchase from them without hesitation, saved seller, excellent.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much, Katherine, for a truly pluperfect transaction.
