George Vertue FSA (1684 – 1756) was an English engraver and antiquary, whose notebooks on British art of the first half of the 18th century are a valuable source for the period. Approximately five hundred portraits are attributed to Vertue, a similar number of published plates were devoted to antiquarian subjects. Many of the portraits were printed as frontispieces, most are regarded as accurate representations of the subject and many are not without artistic merit. As official engraver to the Society of Antiquaries, with works relating to this field of natural history, Vertue was prolific: Richard II at Westminster; a view of Waltham Cross; the shrine of Edward the Confessor; are notable mentions from his works in Vetusta Monumental. His publications include A Description of the Works of Wenceslaus Hollar , 1745 (reprinted 1759); and Medals, Coins, Great Seals, Impressions from the Works of Thomas Simon, 1753 (reprinted 1780). Vertue was also involved with the pre-production of surveys of royal collections, Vanderdoort's catalogue of the collection of Charles I, Chiffinch's James II collection and his on that of Queen Caroline at Kensington; these saw print after his death, prefaced by Walpole. Adam Mansfeldt de Cardonnel-Lawson, in early life Adam Cardonnel FSA Scot (1746/7–1820) was a Scottish antiquarian. He was the sole surviving son of Mansfeldt de Cardonnel of Musselburgh, a commissioner of the customs and salt duties in Scotland, and his wife Anne, daughter and heir of Thomas Hilton of Low Ford, County Durham. He was a grandnephew of Adam de Cardonnel, secretary to the Duke of Marlborough. Cardonnel was educated for the medical profession, and practised for a while as a surgeon. When the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland was founded in December 1780, he was elected a fellow; he also served as curator from 1782 to 1784. Cardonnel left Scotland on succeeding to the estates of his second cousin Hilton Lawson, at Chirton and Cramlington in Northumberland. He served as High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1796, and assumed the surname of Lawson after Cardonnel. In 1811 he began to pull down his house at Chirton, and went to live in a small farmhouse at Cramlington. Professionally re-backed. Gift quality. RAREB1780FQRX 07/24 - HK1903

The shipping was fast and the book was extremely well packaged. The book itself is exactly as pictured and although rare books are expected to be expensive, I was able to get a small discount that at least covered the shipping. I'm happy with my purchase, so I can say that it was a good value. I love to find old relics that kind of come full circle to find their home. Welcome home to this little gem in the form of a small book. I will take very good care of you! I highly recommend this seller.

Just picked up my package from Robin Rare Books and let me start by saying WOW!!! Book as advertised for sure. the value of the book certainly dictated some care in shipping but never did I think to this extent. The packaging was incredible. bigger box than needed at first thought but after opening based on the care and multiple layers of packing It would have survived a Tank rolling over it. Very grateful for you listing and working with me on the book, true piece of history I will cherish

I recently discovered Folio Society books and purchased a number of them from this site to add to my library of Easton Press books. I had a positive experience with each seller. They carefully wrapped the books in packing material to prevent damage during shipping. The books arrived in the condition described. I am looking forward to reading each and every one. I recommend them all.
