All published in the same year 1773. Comprising the works in verse and prose by William Shenstone in two volumes, and his letters sent particular friends from the year 1739 to 1763. Interestingly, William Shenstone was one of the earliest practitioners of landscape gardening, and influenced the trend away from Neoclassical formality and into the direction of the greater simplicity of nature. Illustrated with a frontispiece, decorations to the title page, and a headpiece to volumes one and two, as well as a folding map to volume two. CONDITION In full calf binding with five raised bands. Externally sound with slight edge wear and shelfwear, minor bumping to the extremities and slight rubbing and scuffing to the spine. Minor damp mark to the front board to volume one. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean throughout, with the occasional marking and the odd spot, as well as the occasional annotation in pencil by a previous owner. Illustrated with a frontispiece, decorations to the title page, and a headpiece to volumes one and two, as well as a folding map to volume two. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
