Description

Pub. Virgilii Maronis - Bucolics, Georgics, Aeneid Complete with refreshed endpapers and blanks. PROVENANCE: From the Virgil Collection of Craig Kallendorf (1954 - 2023), who owned the largest private collection of Virgil works (1,1150 editions, not including Incunable books) in the world. Only a handful of prominent institutions like the British Library had larger collections. 89 of the books in his collection were the only known surviving copies, 71 only had one other known copy. He worked closely with Princeton University in helping to assemble, supplement and catalog its Junius Spencer Morgan Virgil collection. Craig Kallendorf was Professor of English and Classics at Texas A&M University. He was the author or editor of 27 books and more than 170 articles, book chapters, and reference work entries. Among Kallendorf’s groundbreaking monographs on the Virgilian tradition, special note might be made of his Virgil and the Myth of Venice: Books and Readers in the Italian Renaissance (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1999), which shows how the wide reading of the Aeneid, accessed in both Latin and Italian editions, contributed to Venetian ideology and the so-called “myth of Venice.” With its publication, according to reviewer Diana Robin (Renaissance Quarterly, 55.4 [2002], p. 1394), Kallendorf is to be recognized as “the leading authority on the Virgilian tradition in early modern print culture in Italy.” ABOUT THE BOOK Published in 1610 in Cologny, Switzerland by Stephanus Gamonetus. Bound in later beautiful, patterned full leather boards; spine with four, thick raised spine bands separating tastefully gilded compartments with decorative tooled gilt bordering and a gilt lettered red morocco gilt spine label in compartment two. Collated and complete. Quarto, 9 3/4” x 6 3/4”, [32]-732-62-[76] pp. Etienne Gamonet's mark on the title (fontaine accompanied by the motto "Ego sitienti Dabo de fonte aquae vivae gratis apoc. XXI"), woodcut bands, decorative initials, and tailpieces. Title in red and black. The Latin motto translates to “I will give to him who is thirsty from the fountain of living water freely, Apocrypha XXI.” In addition to the Bucolics, Georgics and Aeneid, there are commentaries by various ancient authors on Virgil, edited by Jean-Baptiste Du Val; biographical notes on Virgil; verses dedicated to Virgil; an epistle to the readers; and a posthumous dedicatory epistle by Jean-Baptiste Du Val addressed to Pierre Daniel are all included as introductory pieces.Junius Philargyrius's commentaries on the Bucolics and the Georgics have their own pagination at the end of the volume. Note: In the late 16th century and into the 17th century a number of Geneva publishers moved to or set up offices in Cologny, Switzerland. By claiming Cologny or “Colonia Allobrogum” as the publication location, they were able to circumvent French laws which banned books from Geneva. CONDITION REPORT: Exterior: NEAR FINE. Fresh and colorful, unfaded. Lightly rubbed extremities and boards. A few small holes of worming at foot of spine near the joints and on text block edges. INTERIOR: Square spine, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Trimmed pages. Refreshed endpapers. Water dampening stains along margins throughout book, mostly to the top margin and top portion of the text block. Multiple areas of worming along the margins. Foxing varies - light to sporadic in certain areas and moderate to heavy in others. The Georgics have been numbered by multiples of 5 in pencil. Only a few areas of antiquarian marginalia. Pencil date of “1610” on title page and a faded 17th to early 18th century former owner signature. Two spots of inner margin paper repair on title page. Signs of handling: thumbing, bent page corners, creases, some smudges, some raggedy edges. Age-toned pages. Craig Kallendorf’s ex libris sticker on FFEP. Please view pictures as they are an important part of the condition description and book information. ***Be sure to check out my dozens of other rare Virgil works being listed for sale from the amazing Craig Kallendorf Virgil Collection, including 12 from the 1500s. I am beyond thrilled to have this rare first edition copy of "The Girl Who Ran for President"! I had never heard of Belva Lockwood, neither has anyone else I know. I loved learning about her story and received this book quickly which was a bonus. It was packaged well which I appreciated - the seller put in the extra effort to assure I received the book as described. The price was on point for the item and I'm so happy to add it to my bookcase.

Book arrived as described - very pleased indeed with it. Had excellent communication with Ryan (the seller) over a difficulty with the postal system in the US - all was resolved satisfactorily.
