George Vogler, Senator of Brandenburg * , who observes Christ as his Lord," dated 1537. Preface/Dedication on Volume 2 (The last 12 chapters of Luke), addressed to the same, dated 1540. * Likely Chancellor George Vogler of Brandenburg (1486-1550), who was a friend of the Reformation. About the Author: Johannes Brenz (1499-1570) was a German Lutheran reformer and theologian, a contemporary of Martin Luther and acquaintance of Luther's friend Philip Melanchthon. In fact, he has been ranked just below those two giants, as one of the three greatest theologians of the era. Full title: "In evangelion quod inscribitur secundum Lucam, duodecim priora capita, homiliae centum & decem. AVTORE IOANNE BRENTIO. Eiusdem Homiliae octoginta in duodecim posteriora capita, ac in historiam passionis & Resurrectionis CHRISTI. Accessit locuples rerum memorabilium INDEX. Francoforti per Petrum Brubachium, Anno Domini 1563" Which roughly translates as: "On the Gospel According to Luke, the first twelve chapters, one hundred and ten homilies. BY JOHANNES BRENZ. Plus eighty homilies of the same on the twelve subsequent chapters, including the history of the passion and resurrection of CHRIST. Followed by a rich INDEX of memorabilia. [Printed in] Frankfurt by Peter Braubach, A.D. 1563." Temporal Context: This book was written in 1537 when Martin Luther was 54 years old and Philip Melanchthon was 40 years old. Columbus had just "sailed the ocean blue" 45 years earlier. Your particular copy of the book was printed in 1563, during the author's lifetime--3 years after Philip Melanchthon's passing, 71 years after Columbus discovered America and 57 years before the Mayflower landed. The author, Johannes Brenz was still alive--being 64 years old--and would live on for another 7 years. I find no mildew or other signs of moisture damage other than the stain pictured. There is no mildew smell, only normal faint "old book" odor. - This book is sold AS-IS, priced in accordance with its rarity, value, and condition.
